Credit Card FAQs

It is often believed that credit card interest rate and APR (annual percentage rate) are the same. However, some financial products have different interest rates and APRs. The interest rate is the rate at which you borrow money based on market rates and your credit score. On the other hand, APR includes additional fees and costs such as origination fees, broker fees, or other charges that are part of the loan; the lender determines it. In simpler terms, the interest rate helps you determine your monthly costs, while the APR enables you to determine the total cost of the loan. Federal law mandates lenders to disclose the APR in every consumer loan agreement.

There are three main types of fees for credit cards: transaction feeslate fees, and annual fees. Fees are different from interest, which is charged when you don’t pay off your card in full each month.

Transaction fees

Most banks impose transaction fees for activities such as exceeding your limit or transferring a balance. However, NY TEAM only charges fees if you take a cash advance or make a foreign purchase using our cards. You can check the benefits of each card to see if any fees apply. We pride ourselves on charging significantly fewer fees than banks and credit unions. Try and see how delighted you will be with our lower fees.

Late fees

If you pay your card late, we may charge up to $20 as a late fee. This is lower than the fee charged by many banks.

Annual fees

Credit cards with an annual fee are typically associated with excellent perks and rewards. The fee charged helps cover the cost of these benefits. However, NY TEAM’s credit cards are unique because they offer additional benefits without any fees whatsoever.

Saving money on credit card fees

Our fee schedule lists all the fees associated with our cards. After you apply for and receive one of our cards, we will furnish you with a disclosure that outlines any potential fees. You can avoid most credit card fees.

Debit cards offer a significant advantage as they help you stay on budget. This is because the purchase gets debited immediately from your existing funds, making overspending harder. Additionally, applying for a debit card is easy and typically comes with no fees. Even if you don’t have a high credit score, you can still qualify for a debit card. At NY TEAM, all our checking accounts have a no-fee debit card.

On the other hand, credit cards provide the advantage of making larger purchases that you may need more cash for now, such as appliances or unexpected car repairs. Credit cards can also help you build your credit history and increase your credit score when used correctly. A favorable credit history and score can help you get better loans in the future, like a car loan or a house mortgage.

At NY TEAM, we offer both debit and credit cards. We’re here to assist you if you need help choosing between the two or deciding which credit card to apply for. Please visit one of our branches or call us to speak with a representative. Alternatively, you can apply for a card online.

How We Will Calculate Your Balance:

We use a method called “average daily balance (including new purchases).”

Balance Transfer Introductory APR:

Any existing balances on NY Team Federal Credit Union loan or credit card accounts are not eligible for the Introductory APR for balance transfers.

Loss of Introductory APR:

We may end your Introductory APR for purchases and apply the Penalty APR if you are 60 days late in making a payment.

Application of Penalty APR:

Your APR may be increased to the disclosed Penalty APR if you are 60 days late in making a payment.

Effective Date:

The information about the costs of the card described in this application is accurate as of: August 19, 2019
